Records relating to Eshott House : addition, 1589-1815 (bulk 1758-1803).

The papers primarily document the administration of the debt-burdened estate of Thomas Carr of Eshott House by his lawyer Thomas Adams who ultimately purchased the estate from his client. They include business and legal correspondence; accounts, receipts, valuations and other estate records; documents related to the transfer of the estate to Adams; and other financial and personal papers. A large portion of the letters, dated between 1784 and 1788 with some draft replies from Adams and related correspondence from other interested parties, demonstrate the financial straits that Thomas Carr found himself in and are often pathetic in their appeal to Adams for relief for him and his family. Early documents and letters from the 16th-17th relate to the once-prosperous Carr family include; an inventory of the goods and chattles of Thomas Carr (d. 1616); wills, legal notices, a copy of the tenor of estates of Eshott (the family home), and lists of funeral expenses. The addition also includes a series of letters between Thomas Adams and one of his main contacts in London, William Tate, of Tate and Whiteside, merchants of Lime Street. Tate acted on Adams's behalf not only as a supplier of fruits, wines, books, household goods but also acted as his trusted man of business looking after Adam's properties and shipping interests, purchasing stock, and acting as a conduit for his financial dealings with America and Jamaica. The correspondence between Adams and his mother date from his early years in London while he was training as a lawyer with a firm of solicitors belonging to Mr. Collingwood. They include detailed reflections on his social life in London as well as discussions of local matters in his home county in Northumberland; reports about his business affairs; reports on his two brothers who were also in London.
